What is a Municipal Plan?

A Municipal Plan is a strategic document that outlines a municipality’s long-term vision for land use, growth, and development. It addresses:

· Land use designations (rural, residential, commercial, environmental)

· Housing needs and community services

· Economic development

· Environmental conservation

The Plan promotes sustainable growth while preserving rural and small-town character. It guides future decisions related to development, infrastructure, and environmental management.

What is a Zoning By-Law?

A Zoning By-law is a legal tool that puts the Municipal Plan into action. It divides the municipality into zones and sets rules for how land can be used and developed.

Key features of the District of Carleton North Zoning By-law include:

· 16 zones covering residential, commercial, industrial, rural, institutional, and special purposes

· Setbacks, lot sizes, building height and placement

· Permitted and conditional uses for each zone

· Special overlays for environmental conservation and flood-risk areas

It ensures that development occurs in an orderly and fair way, balancing growth with safety, services, and the environment.
