The 1974 Florenceville Beaver “A” Baseball Team won the Provincial Title and the right to represent New Brunswick at the Canadian Beaver Baseball Championships in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The team of 12- & 13-year-olds, coached by Bun Veysey and Stephen McCain, won their zone playoffs with wins over Fredericton and then went 3 – 0 against teams from Dalhousie, Moncton and St. Stephen-Milltown to win the provincial title in a four-team double knockout tournament. Coach Veysey described his team as looking “like rag dolls.” He noted “I don’t think we had two uniforms alike.” He went on to state, “Its quite a thing for 15 boys from the country to go to a national championship. You might say our boys are right from the woods, but they don’t play like bushman.”
These kids showed grit, determination, and character in winning the provincial title against teams from larger urban centres and then went on to proudly represent their province in the national championships.
These 15 kids went on to contribute to the development of sports and recreation in the Carleton North area and beyond both as athletes, coaches and officials.
