Robert Jon Rogers, better known as Bobby, to most, was born in Bristol on August 3rd, 1946 and passed on March 9, 2019. In 1952 at the age of 9, he was diagnosed with Polio, losing the use of his legs. He had to wear braces on his legs and use crutches to get around. This did not stop him from playing minor hockey or baseball. After his minor hockey days, he went on to play junior and gentlemen’s hockey as a goaltender playing on his knees. He also coached minor hockey and could even be found sharpening skates in the old Florenceville Arena.
In 1958 he was chosen “Jimmy” for the Province of New Brunswick and toured the province with wrestler “Wipper Billy Watson” to promote the Easter Seals Campaign of that year.
In the late 60’s he coached softball and baseball and could even be found as an umpire for both. He looked after the 2 ball fields in Bristol, and you could find him there every day fixing up batters’ boxes or the pitchers mound. Many said that these were the best ball fields in the valley. The work he put into the ball fields did not go unnoticed and one of the fields in Bristol is now named “The Bobby Rogers Memorial Field” in his honour.
