Chipman “Chip” Hunter
Inducted: 2023
For decades, Chip Hunter played an integral role in the development of Carleton Minor Hockey Association as a builder, coach and referee. As part of a rebuilding process in the early 1990s, Chip visited the local elementary schools to promote the Minor Hockey program. This resulted in over 50 kids joining every season, enough for two teams. Along with Ron Arbeau and Ted Deweyert, Chip coached teams, put-ting into place skill-based practices and off-ice conditioning with a simple game plan: teach skills and attitude. Under his mentorship, he fostered an environment where players thrived both as athletes and as individuals.
In 1996, Chip became President of the CMHA. During his tenure, a constitution was written, team governance structures were established, and community members were sought out to coach and act as team representatives. He provided guidance to aspir-ing coaches and nurtured a positive team culture within the association.
For some, Chip Hunter will be remembered as a referee. As a member of the “third team”, he not only officiated minor hockey and high school hockey games, but he mentored young officials and assigned referees for minor hockey. Chip embodied fairness and professionalism. With a keen grasp of the intricacies of the game’s rules, his accurate and unbiased decisions earned him the respect of players, coaches, and spectators alike.
Chip Hunter’s commitment to the growth of hockey has enriched the sport at all levels.
