Inducted: 2025
Originally from Douglasfield, Miramichi, Joe moved to Florenceville in 1972 and worked as a forester for Crabbe Lumber until his retirement in 1998. He had previously worked for Fraser Woodlands and Dead River Company. Not one to sit still, Joe loved to work. He also cut wood on his own properties and managed his Christmas tree farm for many years.
After graduating from the Maritime Forest Ranger School in 1959, Joe enrolled at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Bachelor of Science in the Forestry program. In 1962, he helped create the first UNB Intercollegiate Lumberjack Competition and established UNB’s Lumberjack Team. A top competitor, he won “The Bull of the Woods” trophy four consecutive years before graduating in 1966.
In 1971, Joe played a key role in helping the Plaster Rock Lions Club host the Provincial Lumberjack Championships. This lumberjack event went on to become the largest in the province for more than twenty years.
Joe competed for twenty-two years with his partner, Frances Goodine from Crombie Settlement. Together, they earned awards in crosscut, log roll, axe throw, kettle boil, bucksaw, wood chop and the Most Sportsmanlike. Joe also won the provincial title in 1977.
In 2002, Joe was recognized by Woodstock’s Old Home Week Committee for his contributions to their Lumberjack Competition. He was inducted into the New Brunswick Lumberjack Hall of Fame in 2008 as a significant builder to the sport both provincially and nationally.
The Trevors-Goodine Lumberjack Competition, named in honor of Joe and his friend Frances Goodine, was established in Bath, NB in 2015 and continues to be held annually as part of the provincial lumberjack circuit.
