Public Art – Meet the Artists

February 4th, 2025

We’re excited to showcase three talented artists bringing their creative vision to the Vesey Centre on (40 McCain St) on February 11!

Their proposals will transform the space with originality, innovation, and inspiring art.

Stop by and check it out! The models will be on display for viewing from February 3rd to 7th.

The artists will be onsite in different locations inside the Veysey Centre 9:30-11:30AM on Tuesday, February 11 to answer questions and talk about their ideas.  Check them out!   Let us know what you think!  (Feedback forms will be available and will be considered by the selection committee.)

Detailed information on the Artists and their Art can be viewed on the Andrew and Laura McCain Art Gallery Website  Public Art – Andrew and Laura McCain Art Gallery.

Alanna Baird:

Alanna Baird is proposing a river of brightly coloured circles along the wall of the walking track – with a twist!  Visually, her “Quiet Spots” add interest and fun to the industrial structure of the place; at the same time — being made of acoustic felt — the spots also soften the sharp sounds that can be part of a busy and noisy gymnasium.

Cat Candow

Cat Candow has taken bobbin lace (normally something done with very fine thread) and gone big. Really big. She’s proposing four pieces, scattered through the Veysey Centre, different and yet connected. If chosen, this may be a world’s first – certainly the first time bobbin lace at this scale has been attempted in Canada!

Karen LeBlanc

What do you get when you combine the Olympic rings with the colours and shapes found throughout the Veysey Centre, and figure out how to make a normally flat art form (weaving) go 3-dimensional?  “Colours and Shapes Weave Communities Together” is Karen LeBlanc’s response.
