Running for Town Council
🗓️ New Brunswick’s Municipal Elections are Monday, May 11th.
Any person who is a resident of District of Carleton North, electoral Region M17, (for at least 6 months prior to election day) and is at least 18 years of age can run for District of Carleton North Town Council. To run in a ward, they must be a resident of that ward when they are nominated. District of Carleton North has five elected seats – including the Mayor. Seven Councillors represent the 5 wards and two Councillors-at-Large.

Elections typically take place every 4 years. Individuals wanting to run for Town Council must submit an nomination forms to the Municipal Returning Office. Nomination forms can be found at HERE or from the local Municipal Returning Office. More information for prospective candidates can be found at Elections NB.

Beginning of Nominations: March 23, 2026
Nominations Close: April 10, 2026 (2pm)
Deadline for Withdrawal of Nominations: April 13, 2026 (5pm)
Special Ballots Available: April 20, 2026
Advance Poll: May 2 and May 4, 2026
Election Day: May 11, 2026
Declaration of Winning Candidates: May 13, 2026
Deadline for Recount Applications: May 21, 2026
Town Council is responsible for conducting the business of municipal government. This is accomplished through regular Council meetings, Committee of the Whole meetings, District committee meetings and community committee or board meetings.
- Represent their Ward and the entire municipality
- Review and adopt policies
- Pass By-Laws and budgets
- Set the strategic direction of the District
- Manage the long-term fiscal health
- Membership in standing committees and Adhoc committees
Council consists of 8 representatives:
- 1 Mayor
- 1 Councillor for each of the 5 Wards
- 2 Councillors at-large
- The Deputy Mayor is elected at the first meeting of the new Council from the newly elected Councillors
- Bi-Weekly Regular Council Meetings
- Committee meetings
- Code of Conduct and Confidentiality
- Public Accountability

- Full-time employee of a municipality, regional service commission, or an municipal official cannot be a candidate in that municipality.
- Judges, election officials, or anyone declared ineligible by election laws.
- Federal or provincial civil servants who have not received permission from their employer.

- Federal Government (Government of Canada): Handles matters of national concern and powers set out in the Constitution Act.
- Provincial Government (Government of New Brunswick): Has authority over matters within New Brunswick, including health, education, justice, and municipalities.
- Municipal/Local Government (Cities, Towns, and Rural communities): Fire & Police Protection, Land Use Planning, Road Maintenance, Waste Management, Water & Sewer, and Animal Control.
- Joint/Shared Responsibilities: Environment, Infrastructure, Economic Development, Housing.
